Legacy: Box yourself
I'm being fairly literal here, and while completely unrelated to business, I think that this quirky example of legacide demonstrates the concept really well.
The idea of burial dates back over 130 000 years, although some scholars believe that it can be traced even further back to Neandrethal man.
In order to slow down the decomposition of the body, techniques such as embalming were introduced, and later, coffins. If you bought into the idea of, "live fast, die young, and have a good looking corpse" coffins were for you. These low tech boxes were used to protect the body from the bacteria that would attack it and caue it to decompose becoming once again part of the ecosystem. Dust to dust if you will.
You see where I'm going with this yet?
We live in a "green" world. A world where recycling is vast becoming the rule and not the exception. We care about our planet and we understand the importance of looking after it.
And yet we cut down trees to make boxes to keep out the bacteria that will turn us into nutritious fertilizer.
Really?
This is simply crazy. We should be burying ourselves in rapidly biodegradable cardboard coffins that contain agents that actualy accelerate the docomposition process (would you like a dash of lime with that shroud, madam?). We should have signs on the box inviting worms in for the chef's special.
What about cremation I hear you say? Cremation is all well and good, but you're not really giving back to mother earth. If you decide to BBQ yourself though, forgoodness sake, don't burn a tree with you. The idea that you get burnt in an oak coffin is criminal - I also don't for one second believe that the funeral homes burn the boxes like they insist that they do.
Rent one for the occasion if you really must. Or better still, in both cases buy one from these guys: http://www.creativecoffins.com/ you can even brand them. Love it. Oh, and there pay-off line rocks too: Green is the way to go.
And if green really is your thing, you can become green, no really. The Bios Urn will turn you into a tree. Rad. http://www.martinazua.com/eng/design-nature/bios-urn/
There is simply too much legacy here, your family will go the traditional route unless you stipulate otherwise. So stipulate. Discuss it with them, and if you haven't, discuss your thoughts on organ donation. What the world needs is one celbrety to hit the dark unknown in a cardboard coffin for it to become in vouge for the rest of us.
In the meantime though, you'll do.
